Pattern and Project Help: making a pattern from an old skirt

Hi there.
I hope there'll be someone here who might be able to help me... I have a simple a-line skirt that I love but it is getting frayed at the edges. I've looked for a replacement but haven't found one like it so I thought I could use the old skirt to create a pattern to remake it.
Basically, before I start taking it apart at the seams, I'm wondering if you have any tips on how to do this. Is it as simple as unpicking the seams and laying all the pieces out on a big sheet of paper?! Or should I just take the measurements and use these to draw a pattern...?
It has pockets and a zip. I'd be happy to leave out the pockets as they might be beyond my skills but I imagine I'd need to keep the zip! I've made a few pairs of curtains before but never clothes.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Try out the technique used in this old Threadbanger video:

Hope that helps! If there are darts and pleats and stuff in the skirt, this might not work but it's worth a try. :)
